Foundation Awards $43,061.76 in grants

The Wayne County Foundation has awarded $43,061.76 to fifteen organizations for education and community activities programs and projects. These grants were made possible by income from unrestricted endowment funds of the Foundation. A number of grants were awarded for after school programs. The complete list of grant awards follows:

Centerville-Abington Elementary School - $4,000.00
To purchase books and supplies to assist with the implementation of a Literacy Collaborative Model for Centerville-Abington Elementary School. The long-term professional development program is designed to provide the school with the means to create and maintain a comprehensive, school-wide approach to literacy instruction in the primary grades.

Cornerstone Childcare Ministry - $1,290.00
To assist with costs of starting a 41 week after school program for younger elementary students. The program will facilitate educational play to reinforce phonics, early reading and letter and number recognition.

Crestdale Elementary School - $1,000.00
To support a "Literacy through Photography" program for second graders at Crestdale Elementary School. This program is designed to improve students' literacy skills through a multi-lesson curriculum by using photography, writing and analysis skills.

Wernle Children's Home - $1,300.00
To assist with costs to fund a "Behind the Scenes: Video Production Skills Workshop." This workshop intends to provide a positive after school educational program for 54 male students from Wernle.

Richmond Art Museum - $5,000.00
To sponsor the first All-Wayne County High School Art Exhibition. This competition will be open to all Wayne County public, private or home-schooled high school students.

Girl Scouts of Treaty Line Council - $2,412.00
To fund the cost for 70 five year old girls to attend the Head Start Daisy Program, a collaboration between Girl Scouts of Treaty Line Council and Head Start.

Baxter Neighborhood Help Center/I.U. East - $2,000.00
To fund materials for a free tutoring and academic skill building program for primary and secondary students and those seeking a GED.

E.G.G./R.W.C.C.-Business Education Liaison - $2,500.00
To provide materials and busing expenses for Career Day on November 17, 2006. Approximately 900 10th grade students from Wayne County will be invited to participate.

Junior Achievement - $1,857.76
Toward the expenses to expand the "Our Community" program to eight additional second grade classrooms. Approximately 176 additional students would be added to the program.

Y.W.C.A.- $2,000.00
To provide educational materials and support the development of a Sudden Infant Death, Shaken Baby Syndrome program, and a car seat safety program.

Parks Foundation/Cope Environmental Center - $1,500.00
To provide the guest speaker for a workshop to train 35 Wayne County and City of Richmond government officials in green building design and energy efficiency; and fund an information presentation for the public.

Richmond Family Y.M.C.A. - $6,469.00
To fund the cost of the curriculum resources and activity planning guides for the implementation of a new school-age care curriculum program which will provide enriching experiences and activities during their after-school program.

Cambridge City Public Library - $1,500.00
To provide the "Library Literacy for Life" project to encourage children, young adults and adults to read and increase literacy in Western Wayne County.

Girls, Inc. - $3,450.00
To assist with funding the program Great Girls, Wonderful Women! which will provide monthly highlights of accomplishments of local women throughout the year.

Centerville-Center Township Public Library - $6,783.00
To purchase two drop boxes, one for books and one for audio visual materials, enabling library patrons to return materials at any time.
